When a wall can be good enough
In a dark room, a smooth neutral wall can be a useful low-cost starting point. It lets you test image size, seating and projector placement before committing to a frame.
Why UST exposes wall imperfections
Because UST light arrives at a steep angle, small bumps or waves can cast visible shadows and distort straight lines. A wall that looks flat in ordinary room light may not behave like a tensioned screen surface.
What an ALR screen adds
A UST-specific ALR screen is engineered to accept projector light from below while reducing more of the competing room light. The result can be a more stable image in a mixed-use room, especially in darker scenes.
Use the wall as a planning tool
If possible, project the desired 100- or 120-inch image on the wall first. Confirm furniture height, speaker clearance and seating distance, then decide whether a fixed-frame screen is practical.
