Ambient light rejection is about direction. A UST projector sits close to the wall and throws light upward at a steep angle. A UST-specific ALR surface is engineered around that geometry so useful projector light is directed toward the viewer while more unwanted light from above or other directions is absorbed or redirected.
Why a white wall behaves differently
A plain wall scatters light more broadly. It reflects the projector, ceiling lights and window light without the same directional filtering. In a dark room that can be acceptable; in a bright mixed-use room, black levels and perceived contrast can collapse.
Why UST screens are special
A screen designed for conventional long-throw projection expects light arriving from closer to straight-on. UST optics arrive from below at a much steeper angle. That is why a screen can be called “ALR” and still be the wrong ALR geometry for your projector.
What ALR cannot fix
- A projector that is too dim for the desired image size
- Incorrect placement or focus
- A screen that is physically warped
- Strong light arriving from the same direction as accepted projector light
